Whether you are new to hunting or you have been hunting for many years you are probably aware of some of the modern advances in technology that can help you be more successful on your next hunting trip. One of these pieces of equipment is the modern laser rangefinder. More and more hunters are using a range finder to help determine the accurate distance to their target but choosing the best rangefinder can be a challenge with so many options available on the market. To ensure you get a quality product its best to purchase one from a reliable optics maker that has been around for many years like the famous optics manufacturer Leica.
Leica optics was the first company to ever produce a laser rangefinder for the civilian market. They made binoculars in 1992 and then they also made the first range finding monocular in 2000 which was called the Rangemaster 800. The newer Rangemaster 1000R is the evolution of the Leica rangefinders and today Leica is one of the best manufacturers of optics for laser rangefinders. The 1000r is used by hunters and shooters worldwide.
The CRF 1000R comes with a nice carry bag and you also get a sling that attaches to the body of the rangefinder making is easier to carry out in the bush. You also get a five year warranty from the date of purchase as well as a test certificate verifying the product meets the specifications made by Leica before it ever leaves the factory. A detailed manual which comes in several languages explains all the functions and how to use the rangefinder.
The Rangemaster 1000 (minus the R) was first introduced in 2011 and the 1000R was released in 2013 which is the updated version. The main difference in the 1000R model is it has an added function for measuring inclination and it also has some basic ballistic software which uses the data in the rangefinder inclinometer to give equivalent horizontal range. This is especially important if you are hunting in the mountains and you aim at your target at a steep angle, up or down. Then you have to use the equivalent horizontal range for estimation of the bullet drop which greatly improves accuracy.
The Leica rangefinder is really easy to use, it only has two buttons which allow you to choose the mode you want to use , yards or meters, and then you can choose whether to show direct distance to the target or the equivalent horizontal range. When using equivalent horizontal range the first measurement gives you direct distance and afterwards you get the equivalent horizontal range, really easy to use but highly effective. It has a maximum range of 1000 yards or 900 meters and its really fast. When you press the button the maximum time for the measurement is 0.9 seconds but in most cases its even faster. The accuracy is less than 1 meter of error in measurements out to 900 meters which sis more than accurate enough for hunting or shooting purposes.
The optical performance is on a level expected from Leica. You get 7X magnification and a 24 mm objective lens. It is also fog proof since it is filled with nitrogen gas as well as being able to function normally in cold weather. The 1000R is waterproof up to 1 meter so you don’t have to worry about using it in wet weather or dropping it in a puddle. The eye piece is adjustable to fit anyone whether you wear glasses or not. You also get scan mode for quick ranging on the move. The 1000R is very compact and easy to carry in a jacket pocket while still offering a high quality , reliable product that can calculate incline or decline quickly. You you are a hunter and looking for a top of line laser rangefinder I definitely recommend the Leica CRF 1000R.
